Clearwing Moth unknown - Synanthedon acerni - Male
Essex, Ontario, Canada
June 9, 2005
Size: About 15 mm or more
I have been unable to id this borer for over a year now. On Hoptree (Ptelea trifoliata). Two photos which I think are the same borer. Does anyone know the name?

Moved from Clearwing Moths.

Synanthedon acerni male
The large, brown-black discal spots on otherwise clear forewings and the hint of orange-red on the anal tuft (or what's left of it) indicates the specimen is a worn out Synanthedon acerni male (the maple callus borer). This particular species is quite common in Ontario.

This Strikes Me....
.... as different from your next two Sesiid species, but I can't identify it. The anal tuft appears to have some color not found in S. exitiosa.
