Colorful seed-like bup - Brachys ovatus

Colorful seed-like bup - Brachys ovatus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
July 8, 2006
Size: about 6 mm
This small, seed-shaped buprestid beetle was resting on the side of a house. It is one of several species I've collected recently that look particulary seed-like and remain in a defensive tucked position for a long time, reinforcing the seed-like appearance.

Brachys ovatus
This B. ovatus is a female. In the photo of the underside, the last abdominal segment has long curved hairs. This is the way to tell females from the males in this particular species. In all species of Brachys the males have a hairier face than the females.

Thank you, Joshua. I'll see if I can re-shoot and get that last abdominal segment in focus to more clearly illustrate what you're refering to.
