Tiny spotted mothlet - Bucculatrix sexnotata

Tiny spotted mothlet - Bucculatrix sexnotata
Halifax, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada
July 16, 2009
Size: 4-5mm
I just replaced the 2 original images with these cropped ones. Unfortunately, in doing so I lost Bob Patterson's comment about it being a probable Bucculatrix.

I'm pretty sure you are right but that infers that Powell & Opler are in error. I read both Braun's 1927 and 1963 descriptions (links added to Info page) as well as Moths of Western North America p. 57. Powell & Opler say that the specimen they have fed on sunflower and the resemblance to B. sexnotata may be superficial. I'm wondering if they just got the species confused in that the sample of B. sexnotata to which they were comparing their sample was actually something else. Is this your read on it? If so, I would contact MPG to let them know that the image and info including range are in error.

Powell & Opler in error
Yes, they goofed somehow. That moth clearly bears no resemblance to the original description, which is summarized on Wikipedia.

Bucculatrix sexnotata???
This is odd. All the BOLD images of Bucculatrix sexnotata, which can be found here, look just like yours. However, the one image of that species at MPG, which is totally different, is from Jerry Powell. I checked his book and there is no description given. Although I would usually assume BOLD would be more likely to make an error, I'm wondering if they have it right on this one.

replacing photos
Chris, when replacing photos please click Edit under the photo you already posted and then the image selection to add the new photo that will replace the original. This will replace the photo and keep all the original notes.
Information about photos can be found in the guide here.
