Robber fly eating lunch. Thanks to Bug Guide I was able to find out what this strange insect was.

What a wonderful image. Looks like it nailed a horse fly (Tabanidae), too. Hurray:-)

 
Horse fly dinner...
I hope the horse fly was one of the monsters that bit me. They were awful that day.
