Black Ichneumon - Gnamptopelta obsidianator

Black Ichneumon - Gnamptopelta obsidianator
Myrtle Beach, Horry County, South Carolina, USA
This black ichneumon, which I believe is Gnamptopelta obsidianator, was captured in low brush. The antenna and jet black body seem distinctive.

Maybe:-)
Actually, ichneumons can only be determined conclusively by an expert with a really good microscope. In preparing my field guide, most of the experts refused to attempt to identify the ichneumon images that were submitted for consideration. Nice specimen in any event, thank you for sharing.

yeah
Yeah, the ichneumon's are tough and judging from the pile of unidentified pictures in the guide, they won't be able to be IDed further than genus. Since this specimen is almost identical to existing pix of G. obsidianator I will keep it in that guide page for sanity's sake :) or at least until someone changes it
