Margined Leatherwing - Chauliognathus marginatus

Margined Leatherwing - Chauliognathus marginatus
Calvert County, Maryland, USA
May 26, 2006
Size: approx. 1/2"
This beetle is commonly seen on yarrow, especially on the flower heads. It appears to be feeding on nectar or pollen.

I saw two of these on the rudbekia (sp?)- "brown-eyed susans" in our front yard. The seemed to be going for pollen. They are beautiful in the black and khaki (leather) armor. Their abdomens were most interesting with their rings in alternating colors. I'd never seen them before.

I would guess Margined Leathe
