False Bombardier Beetle? - Galerita bicolor

False Bombardier Beetle? - Galerita bicolor
Earleville, Maryland (Situation is approx: Latitude: 39.4401, Longitude: -76.0247), Maryland, USA
August 28, 2004
Just wanted to know that this is a False Bombardier Beetle and is it possible to tell the gender from this photo?

Thank you!

Scott

Yes, Galerita (False Bombardier)
Yes looks like Galerita. There are apparently two species in our area, and I've had not luck distinguishing them. See the Guide Page. I don't know about sex determination.

Galerita bicolor
This is Galerita bicolor, according to shape of head, shown in key on p. 128, figs. 131-133 of Ciegler, Ground Beetles of South Carolina (1). Dillon, p. 105 (2), keys B. bicolor vs. B. janus based on shape of pronotum, also indicating this is G. bicolor. I'll move to the guide for that species.
