Beautiful and beetlecidal - Enoclerus muttkowskii

Beautiful and beetlecidal - Enoclerus muttkowskii
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
July 9, 2006
Size: 12.5 - 13 mm
Finished with its grooming, the clerid's thoughts turned to dinner. Quick as a wink, it pounced on a sap beetle as it ran by. It wrapped front and middle pairs of legs around the sap beetle, turning it belly up in the same movement, and began biting at its upper torasic area with surpisingly large, wicked-looking mandibles. If the sap beetle had any response, it was to try to remain in a legs-tucked position.
