Eyed Click Beetle - Alaus oculatus

New York for April.
Found at edge of cutover woods, fully exposed on dead stump. I was peeling bark from this stump, just inches away, and did not even notice the beetle at first. Great camouflage. Then the eye spots jumped out at me and betrayed its presence. I guess that warning markings can only do so much.
