nymphalid caterpillar - Haploa

nymphalid caterpillar - Haploa
Eagle Creek, Sierra Blanca, Lincoln County, New Mexico, USA
July 3, 2006
Unknown caterpillar, presumably a nymphalid. On a leaf of Dryopteris filix-mas, although it did not seem to be eating the plant (no signs of caterpillar damage on any of the Dryopteris in the area).

One possibility is Haploa
see images of H. confusa here.
Another possibility is Gnophaela, images in the guide here.
