Photinus pyralis - male

Photinus pyralis - Male
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 30, 2006
Size: 14 mm
This species is very common in my yard in June--it flashes at dusk, and the pattern is distinctive: males hover, drop vertically, then give a prolonged flash as they ascend (1).
I originally thought this was a female, but I have been corrected--see comments on image of light organ.
