Photinus pyralis - male

Photinus pyralis - Male
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 30, 2006
Size: 14 mm
Shows complete elytral fold (arrow), as illustrated by White, fig. 78 (1). Genus Photuris has an incomplete fold:

The blob of wax and the piece of carboard, used to immobilize the beetle, are visible at upper right and over the elytron. (This was removed later without harming the beetle.) The ( ) highlight on the eye is from my ring flash. I originally thought this was a female, but I have been corrected--see comments on image of light organ.
