large hornet ? - Vespula squamosa

large hornet ? - Vespula squamosa
Hollywood, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA
May 13, 2012
Size: 1" to 1 1/8"
I have been seeing these for months, but never able to get a pic of one landed. Even this one always kept its wings going. They are always by themselves. This one was "scanning" over a wood chip pile. It landed often, but never appeared to be locating what it was looking for.
