Burying Beetle - Nicrophorus carolinus
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
July 15, 2006
Size: 24 mm
This beetle is N. carolinus. It was found on a raccoon which had been dead a couple of days. Here in Florida, these beetles must compete with the fire ants so they aren't as numerous as in the North. Please see these links: http://www.unk.edu/acad/biology/hoback/carrion_beetles/Nicrophorus1.htm

I found this beetle on my patio here in Newfoundland. Canada... It was found along side my trash cans.... It was the first time in my life to ever see a bettle that big in newfoundland...
