Is this a beetle? - Phengodes plumosa - male

Is this a beetle? - Phengodes plumosa - Male
Reading, Hillsdale County, Michigan, USA
May 14, 2012
Size: .75 to 1 inch
Caught this guy indoors, trying to get outside towards evening. It's some sort of beetle, as far as I can tell. His elytra are malformed, and his head looks similar to Anomala orientalis.

No idea if he emerged indoors, or if he crawled inside somehow. . . help would be appreciated.
