Seed Bug or Plant Bug? How do you differentiate? - Rhiginia cruciata

Seed Bug or Plant Bug? How do you differentiate? - Rhiginia cruciata
Lake Jackson, Osceola County, Florida, USA
July 3, 2006
Size: 11 mm

Neither
I'm pretty sure this is a Scarlet Bordered Assassin Bug or something close to it. Telling the difference between the assassins and the plant bugs is usually that the assassins will have a larger probiscus. Telling the difference between seed and plant bugs is a bit harder. I just look through the guide. Maybe someone else can explain it better!

No.
Sorry to disagree, Lynette, but assassins have SHORTER, much stouter beaks that are easily visible because they are not tucked flush under the chin as the proboscis of a plant-feeder is. You don't generally see the beaks of plant feeders except when they are feeding.

Ok thanks
I guess I should say more visible beaks?

Thanks
Thanks for the ID. Sometimes I just can't seem to find a starting point in bugguide and my field guides. I appreciate your response.
