Episyron quinquenotatus - female

Episyron quinquenotatus - Female
Liberty Wildlife Area, Jackson County, Ohio, USA
July 3, 2006
Size: 8 mm
I submitted this photo only to show how cautious one must be when identifying Episyron (or most other pompilids, for that matter) by photographs. This individual shows only three white marks and in similar configuration to E. biguttatus, yet has four very long comb-spines on the basitarsus and has the eyes only weakly convergent above.
Compare this individual's color pattern:

My photo also shows you the highly variable size ranges for pompilids. I have captured individuals of this species as large as 17 mm, yet this female is less than half that size.
