Broad-necked Root Borer (Prionus pocularis) - Prionus laticollis

Broad-necked Root Borer (Prionus pocularis) - Prionus laticollis
East Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA
July 23, 2011
Added a cropped image in case this might help with more detail.

Placement and ID corrected by Bruce Getty. As a rank beginner with beetles, this seems a better choice.

Prionus sp.
I would lean more towards P. pocularis. In P. laticollis, it also has
12 antennal segments but the upper eye lobes are broadly separated
by more than the width of the scutellum. In yours, it is slightly
less than that width.(1), pg 13, key 18. Still need to
wait for the experts to chime in.

Thanks from a beetle beginner
I looked closely at why I chose what I did, and at your suggestion. Now I can see why yours is probably correct. I had passed over P. pocularis but apparently only noticed the images with the larger and more coarse antennae. Can I presume that those are the male and that the female (what I think I photographed) has somewhat finer antenna?

Thanks for helping, Bruce.

Prionis
There is no question that there is sexual dimorphism with these
guys, but I am not smart enough or experienced enough to help you
out there. Welcome to the Buguide Guide Network.

Not new to Bugguide
Apparently I gave the wrong impression. I have a fairly sizable presence on Bugguide, but it's mostly moths with a few other things scattered around. You can look up my photos if you wish. Beetles would cause me to keep looking for that 30 hour day or the 8 day week. There simply isn't sufficient time to make it a priority. But I will try to learn from every one I encounter…and photograph.

Profiles
I should have looked at your profile, which I normally do. I have
a tendency to think BG is just a beetle site as that is all I
normally look at, keep forgetting about all the other critters and
orders.

Prionus laticollis
Eyes are much too small for pocularis. This is definitely a male laticollis. The darker color and elytral texture also point to laticollis.
