Four-spotted Ghost Moth - Sthenopis purpurascens

Four-spotted Ghost Moth - Sthenopis purpurascens
Lakewood, Oconto County, Wisconsin, USA
July 16, 2006
It was curled up on the wall...unlike the other sphinx that I have found, I had a hard time getting it to open its wings. It was a tan and pink color...there was no markings on the hind wings. Finally after awhile it began to fly, and I was able to snap a couple of pictures with its wings open. Could someone ID....because I looked through the guide and I didn't see one like this on there. I may have missed it

A Ghost Moth in the Family Hepialidae....
looks closely related to 0020 - Four-spotted Ghost Moth - Sthenopis quadriguttatus BUT I don't see 4 spots. Robin McLeod or Tony Thomas may know more about this one.

Hodges 00019
Sthenopis purpurascens. S. quadriguttatus is a junior synonym.

Junior synonym
I don't know what that means. I found both listed as separate species on a few sites, but couldn't find a common name for purpurascens.

Hi Lynette...
...it means that someone has published on the group and merged/lumped two or more species. Only a single species is formally recognized now. The surviving or oldest/senior name is the one to be used. Any other younger/junior name "disappears" or is "sunk" in synonymy (the list of all prior names included in the species. These lists are sometimes very long.) But it can take a long time for the news to get around and for Internet sources to be updated or corrected. It's OK to drop the common name if you wish or Four-spotted Ghost Moth can be retained.
