Robber Fly with Prey? - Neoitamus orphne - female

Robber Fly with Prey? - Neoitamus orphne - Female
Lily Pond, Harriman State Park, Rockland County, New York, USA
May 18, 2012
Size: 20-25 mm
Can someone please ID this robber fly and his prey? My guess is a soldier beetle that has lost its antennae. The exposed hind wing is very long. Perhaps it has been ripped loose in the capture? Other soldier beetles were spotted in the area which is a meadow near a beaver pond and stream.

Now that you've ID'ed it, I located other photographs of N. orphne on BugGuide and found the comments there enlightening as well.
