Wasp or Fly - Hermetia illucens

Wasp or Fly - Hermetia illucens
Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
May 26, 2012
Size: app. 1"
Found on my bedroom window. We find many of these in the house during late spring and summer. They tend to be very quiet, and easy to relocate outside.

Moved from ID Request.

Soldier Fly
Looks like Hermetia illucens, the Black Soldier Fly.(1)

Larvae grow in rotting, disgusting places. Disgusting to humans = full of delicious bacteria to insect larvae.
