Two-Striped Grasshopper - Melanoplus bivittatus

Two-Striped Grasshopper - Melanoplus bivittatus
Sterling Forest, Tuxedo, New York, USA
July 13, 2006
Size: approx. 38mm
Can this be ID'd to species? Thank you.

I agree.
I can't argue with the ID, and am moving your most outstanding image to the guide page. Thanks for sharing!

Adult Female Twostriped...
...or Melanoplus bivittatus, I believe. There's a photo of one in virtually the identical albeit reversed pose on the page about this species on this site, which offers a good chance to compare specimens. Looks recently molted. Her abdomen hasn't enlarged much yet and I can't see any signs of wear and tear...I find these grasshoppers tend to get really decrepit-looking as they age.

Thanks Heimchen and Eric for you help in identifying this grasshopper. Lloyd&Sandy Spitalnik
