Sphinx moth caterpillar? - Eumorpha achemon

Sphinx moth caterpillar? - Eumorpha achemon
Wichita, Kansas, USA
July 18, 2006
Size: 54mm
Does anyone know what this caterpillar is? I've looked in my guide book, as well as BG, and haven't come across an ID yet. Found on Virginia Creeper that was laying on the ground. Perhaps looking for a place to pupate? I might try to raise it if I can provide it the right kind of environment. Thanks for your help.

I think I discovered what it is...
I just came acoss an achemon sphinx caterpillar on BG, but it is green instead of tan. Then I read on the Info page that this caterpillar may be either green or tan.

You're right: here's a tan on
You're right: here's a tan one for you

Achemon sphinx caterpillar
I just posted a comment at another image of this same critter. I live in Wisconsin and saw one of these for the first time last month. The one I saw was very, very orange. It too was feeding on Virginia creeper that was lying on the ground (actually on the gravel shoulder of a highway). When I tried to move the plant to what I thought was a safer location, the caterpillar retracted its head and didn't come out for a long time. It was about the size of my pinky finger. A very, very cool animal.
