Net-winged beetle - Polemius laticornis

Net-winged beetle - Polemius laticornis
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
June 19, 2006
Size: 1.5 cm
Looks like a Plateros species based on the guide page.

Moved
Moved from Soldier Beetles.

Moved
Moved from Net-winged Beetles.

Legs too slender . . .
Lycids are poisonous, and therefore mimicked by members of diverse beetle families.

I guess this one is rather a Cantharid, genus Silis (or close).

regards, Boris

Polemius laticornis?
looking through Downie and Arnett, this beetle appears to match the description for Polemius laticornis (Say) - (yellow humeri appears to be almost unique for NE Am Cantharid) Notched pronotal margin, serrated antenna, segment #2 much smaller than #3 all fit ("Silis, or close"). But I couldn't find any web images or further info. There is one "Polemius" drawing in White's "FG to the Beetles", and it has yellow humeri.
The size from Downie and Arnett was listed as 6-8mm, about half the photo's estimated size.

any thoughts?
Tim

Family
You seem to be correct so I am moving it to the family guide page.
