Not a sawfly.
Looks more like a Lepidoptera, or even a Coleoptera, to me.

Thanks for the assessment. To my untrained eye these larvae seemed similar to some photographs I've seen of the species from the family Argidae.

I thought maybe the larvae had more than 5 prolegs that are evident in some of the photographs, so I was leaning towards sawfly but unfortunately no photographs are at an angle for a definitive count. I didn't realize that some Coleoptera have caterpillar-like larvae. From what I've been reading it seems that those larvae usually have only anal prolegs. So the larvae are probably Lepidoptera then.
