Flat Black Beetle - Hololepta

Flat Black Beetle - Hololepta
Springfield, Virginia, USA
September 1, 2004
A black beetle on a shrub with its wings extended, about to take flight. From my vantage point, it looked very squat and flat. Any help in identifying is appreciated.

Histeridae: Hololepta -- moved to guide
Those mandibles are something. Histeridae: genus Hololepta, methinks. Illustrated in Dillon, I'll jot a guide if there is not one alreday.
North Carolina State University lists H. aequalis (18 spec) and lucida (9 specs).

A new family (and genus) for the guide. I moved to a guide page for the genus.

Hololepta
The first specimen I ever captured was in flight! Truly bizarre.
