Click Beetle? -
Philaenus spumarius
Logy Bay - Middle Cove Beach, Northeast Avalon, Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada
July 20, 2006
Size: 7mm Body Length
Beetle sitting on my car. It jumped a lot and very high, so that's why I'm guessing a Click Beetle of some sort.

meadow spittle bug
Philaenus spumarius.
Spittle bugs are the most powerful jumpers in the insect world, achieving twice the "G"s (1 G = normal gravity) of a jumping flea. The funny thing is, nobody knows how they do it. The don't have any special structures to achieve such powerful leaps.

Thanks again!
Thanks for your comments on this one too. I've moved it to the species page along with the other two that you identified. :)

Homopteran
Not a beetle but some kind of hopper—in the same Order as Cicadas and Aphids, the Homoptera. They are indeed incredible jumpers.

Thanks & Found Another Specimen
Thanks for the ID. I'd better stop guessing. I was way off again. It's a good way to learn though. I found
another specimen
after I posted this one. I got more photos of that one, so I
posted it
too. If this one is a duplicate, it's fine with me to move it to frass. Do the extra photos shown at my
second posting
help provide a more specific idea of species?
