haltere
The white thing is part of the fly, called a haltere. It's a remnant of a second wing and used to help with flying (balance, etc.). There is a haltere on the other side of the fly as well, for a total of two.

When I looked......
at the other side and saw the same structure, I should have guessed that it was part of the fly. Now I know -- thanks!!
