from David Walter: "The mite belongs to the family Caeculidae.
"I can't be sure of the genus, but they are ambush predators of springtails and other small arthropods. They can stand motionless for days with the spiny legs I raised up, waiting for a springtail to wander underneath. I guess that helps make them good subjects for photography."
