Size: about 12mm
my first thought was an Anoplius... and i thought there was a fair likeness to Anoplius americanus. the pictures are not great, as the wasp was small and did not like to stop.

Yes, Anoplius...
and I can just about guarantee you that you are correct in your species ID. This species has just started to get common in Ohio and I've been looking at a lot of them lately. The pattern of the spots (on the 2nd and 3rd tergite and partially interrupted medially) is pretty distinctive for A. americanus americanus. Unless someone has any objections I think this can be moved to the species page I have created.

if I could be god of anything spider wasps would be it:-) I think I would probably make them easier to ID, though.
