Help - what is this?

I just posted a photo in ID Request but am anxious to figure out what this is. They have made burrows very near our backdoor and are continually buzzing around that deck area. I'm concerned as our dogs pass by this area many times during the day.

Hornet or wasp (don't know the difference) It has a yellow jacket type head and thorax (yellow and black). Wings are the length of the body and have a bluish cast. The abdomen is orange with a black end and the legs are a red orange. They are probably about 1.5" long.

Thank you for any and all help!

This has been answered in the photo posted in ID Request. The insect is a 'great golden digger' wasp, Sphex ichneumoneus.
