Large black wasp - Prionyx atratus - female

Large black wasp - Prionyx atratus - Female
Hallelula Junction, Lassen County, California, USA
July 3, 2006
Size: ~25mm
It's as large as Sphex pennsylvanica, but looks a little heftier than the other pics in the guide.

Female
Tarsal-rake spines on forelegs = ♀

Prionyx atratus.
This is most likely Prionyx atratus, a large black wasp in its own right:-) Petiole between abdomen and thorax is too short for a Sphex.
