giant grasshopper - Romalea microptera - Female
Marco Island, Florida, USA
July 16, 2006
Size: 3 1/2+ inches long
Vacationing at Marco Island, walking back to hotel when I noticed this big grasshopper move a bit. It stayed still while I squatted down and took a shot from several feet away with a Canon S1 1S. By far the tallest grasshopper I had ever seen also. After I took the shot, I stepped toward it to see how it would react. It jumped/flew but only a very short distance.

Lubber
A Lubber Grasshopper, Romalea guttata. They are very impressive creatures.
