Great Spangled & Atlantis Fritillary - Speyeria cybele - male - female

Great Spangled & Atlantis Fritillary - Speyeria cybele - Male Female
Bethlehem, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA
July 18, 2006
Both of these butterflies look like Great Spangled Frits, but why the huge difference in size, and also the smaller one has blue eyes instead of yellow that great Spangled's are supposed to have. The smaller one was pursuing the larger one, looking like it was trying to mate.

The small one was confused
maybe inpressed by the big girl. The big one is a Great Spangled, but the little one is an Atlantis Fritillary. Makes for a great comparison of the two. Too bad the little one didn't open his wings out in either shot.

Confused Fritillary
I don't remember the Atlantis Fritillary opening his wings, but just chasing after the larger Great Spangled. I checked my pictures I took, 3 of them, and his wings are closed in each shot.
