I watched this intriguing scene for a few minutes to try and figure out what the male was up to. Several times he came down the web, sniffed around the female and then went up again. I suspect he was considering mating with her while she was distracted by her prey, a mid-size Phanaeus I think. The web is right by my compost pile, where I've seen these beetles before.
