Scudderia nymph - Scudderia

Scudderia nymph - Scudderia
San Diego (Balboa Park), San Diego County, California, USA
July 2, 2006
Size: ~1 cm (body)
Curious about which species and developmental stage this one is.

Moved
Moved from Katydids.

SoCal Katydids
Judging from the range maps in the Singing Insects of North America katydid section There are only two species of Scudderia in southern California: Scudderia furcata and Scudderia mexicana.

The males can be told apart by the shape of a plate called the dorsal process on the tip of the abdomen. This one seems to be a male, but you'd have to have a view from the rear to see the dorsal process, and I'm not sure if the difference can be seen in immature specimens.

If you weren't aware already, there are other genera of Katydids in southern California. I have Microcentrum (either californicum or rhombifolium) and Phaneroptera nana in my yard, and there are others.

It's good to see a contributor from yet another unrepresented corner of Southern California. Welcome!

thanks!
thanks for the info!

i think i have probably seen some of the other species you mentioned. Here is a pic taken by a friend:
