Southern Black Widow - Latrodectus mactans - female

Southern Black Widow - Latrodectus mactans - Female
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
June 23, 2012
Size: approx 1/2 inch
Found in heavily wooded area next to lake. Her web was over six feet in height, from ground level upwards. I first noticed the web and thought it looked like a Black Widow web, but I have never seen one in trees before (mostly under rocks, crevices, old barns etc.) That is a 2-inch long Prionis longhorn beetle she has captured.
