Mydas Fly? - Mydas chrysostomus - male

Mydas Fly? - Mydas chrysostomus - Male
Gloster, Gloster Arboretum, Amite County, Mississippi, USA
June 30, 2006
Size: body length 22.0 mm.
This appears to be a Mydas fly. Confirmation or correction appreciated. Can the ID be narrowed further?
Gayle
Edit, 07 Mar 2010: We shall refer to this specimen as specimen #1. Three additional male individual that appear to be this species have now been recorded. We will refer to these as specimens #2, #3, & #4. Specimen #2 and specimen #4 are excellent matches for Specimen #1. Specimen #3 has greatly reduced red on the abdomen but otherwise appears to be quite similar to #1. All are quite different from M. clavatus. They have a well developed yellowish mystax while M. clavatus has only sparse darker facial hair. M. clavatus has a single red area on the abdomen. Three out of four of these specimens have narrow reddish bands on several abdominal segments. On the fourth, the bands are reduced to thin lines and a couple of small spots.
John Hartgerink has photographed a mated pair in Baton Rouge LA that appears to be this species. Images may be seen here.

Moved
Moved from Mydas.

Looks like Mydas chrysostomus
Looks like Mydas chrysostomus, but I haven't been able to compare M. fulvifrons, M. brunneus, or M. atratus.

Mydas
Certainly a Mydas and though all the eastern specimens are supposed to be M. clavatus, I don't buy it. Too much variation. Very little study on these guys.
