Size: ~1.75mm tall
This was found on a leaf edge. I've not seen anything like it before and not sure it even belongs here at bugguide but it does look like there are possible exit holes. scale or gall related?

Look under the common house spider or cellar spider webs
around your house, and you'll be sure to see some specks more or less like this.

I was thinking this might be a fungus, though the dark spots might be eggs or cavities that had been excavated by insects (perhaps gnat larvae?)
