Milkweed assassin? No. - Zelus renardii

Milkweed assassin? No. - Zelus renardii
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
July 26, 2006
Shown on Queen Anne's Lace. Found in an area where there are some large adult milkw*eed bugs and many larvae. Examples in the Guide look similar to this, but their colors seem more vivid.

(Written September 4, 2007) This definitely isn't Milkweed Assassin Bug.

Original post had just one photo. Hope these aid in ID.

Let's settle for Zelus
There are several species of Zelus that look enough alike to be hard for the non-specialist to identify. Someone who's looked at a lot of identified specimens of all the species in question might be able to recognize them from an image, but there aren't a lot of distinctive and easily-defined visible differences to go on.

The Milkweed Assassin is the only species for which we have identified images. That's probably because its coloration is so different from that of other species. What that means is that it's probably the only Zelus species we can be sure this one isn't. Of course, I'm not an expert, so I could easily be wrong.

i believe it belongs to Z. renardii page

Good info & logic, as always
Hey, two weeks ago I didn't know Zelus from Zeus. Well, actually, I've never photographed Zeus! But three weeks ago, I hadn't shot Zelus, either.

Keep teaching. I'll keep learning. Whatta bargain!
