Quick black fly - Wohlfahrtia vigil
Riley Wilderness Park, Coto De Caza, Orange County, California, USA

Am starting to see a lot of these, to the exclusion of other flies, i.e. robbers and bee. Newcomers are medium to almost large in size and appear very black when in flight. Flight is quick, low and for short distances.

Sarcophagidae?
This is probably a sarcophagid, and the distinctive spotted abdomen reminds me of the genus Wohlfartia. Will be curious what a true fly expert will say.

Lots of horses in the area, and I'm also wondering if it might be a stable fly(Stomoxys calcitrans). Mine seems to have a shorter, rounder thorax and slightly different pattern, tho.

(Written later: I posted another - better shot - and Eric raised the Wohlfartia issue again. He's nailed it.)
