Golden Rain Tree bug - Jadera haematoloma

Golden Rain Tree bug - Jadera haematoloma
Gainesville, Florida, USA
May 11, 2004
This is supposed to be black - sorry my camera insists on making it blue. Found hundreds of these in May but I only just found the ID. They were under a Golden Rain Tree, which makes perfect sense. ID'd through this helpful site Sarasota Extension.

Guide page there for this species
Hannah, I had written a brief guide page for this species (I think), it is at: http://www.bugguide.net/node/view/3601

I think it is the same species. Very cool. I wonder what the thing ate before these trees were introduced? Or is the bug introduced too?

Thanks, Patrick!
I had searched by genus only, which led me to your Jadera page but I didn't notice the species page. I have relocated to the right place now. The Featured Creatures site does list alternate hosts, so perhaps the relationship with Koelreuteria developed recently when it was introduced as an ornamental, and the bug was here first. At least one site suggests this bug should be considered a beneficial, as the Goldenrain tree is an invasive pest, and the bugs eat the seeds.
