Southern Bee Killer - Mallophora orcina

Southern Bee Killer - Mallophora orcina
Gainesville, Florida, USA
June 26, 2004
I keyed this out from the Florida Featured Creatures site as Mallophora orcina, based on abdomen yellow-haired above, black beneath. Confirmed by checking Giff Beaton's image

Nifty--differentiation from Laphria?
Do you know how to tell this genus from Laphria, which also look like bumblebees? I've seen lots of similar robbers here in NC, and I've been calling them Laphria. I may have been misidentifying them! (

Mallophora
The Mallophora all have a very fine terminal antennal segment. No other robber bumble mimic has this except the holy-grail robber Dasylechia. Laphrids have a thickened paddle shaped terminal segment.

I wasn't very scientific about it.
I just checked the images of Laphria and other robber flies on this site and Giff Beatons, and they didn't look right for body shape and facial features, so I kept looking!
