Diogmites neoternatus

Diogmites neoternatus
Snowhill Road north of Cabin Branch Creek, Treyburn area, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 25, 2006
Size: 26 mm
This Diogmites was fluttering against a white wall on a building near some woodlands on a slightly cool morning. Not having my camera at hand, I captured it in a ventilated jar and kept it chilled all day. Bringing it out that evening, it was very sluggish, even after warming, so sat posed on a pad. I took a series of close-ups for fun--perhaps they will come in handy in illustrating the guide page for the genus. Body length measured at 26 mm. The fly seemd to recover a bit, and I released it in my yard.

Lateral view--I think the mostly orange, not strongly-marked abdomen is characteristic of this species. (Corrections welcome, of course.)
