species of butterfly from Limenitis genus
As they get older it will lose some of its brown and look a little watery/translucent. Their appearance is thought to make them look like bird poop.

In my area we have the White Admiral / Red-spotted purple (Limenitis arthemis) and the Viceroy (Limenitis archippus).
