Size: BL 9mm

This type of nocturnal 'sit and wait' hunting technique is used by H. grisea as an alternative to hanging (see linked image).

Legs 1 are held in an elevated position to aid in prey detection.
This may be compensation for poor night vision. H. grisea is a diurnal 'sit and wait' hunter as well, but legs 1 are not elevated in this manner.

H. grisea

Hi, Jeff-

It looks like you've spent some time observing these. This particular specimen has such a "fat" abdomen, perhaps it is gravid? I ask, because Brady's drawings of H. grisea seem to show a much slimmer, more truncated (almost triangular) shape.

I found a specimen this week in the foothills of Los Angeles (Griffith Park). For now, you can see images here (ignore text):

But the length and eye pattern seem to suggest H. grisea. Do you remember what time of year you found her?

images. That's it. This one was collected July 14 2006, see first image in natural habitat. The other two are captive images, so I didn't use date.
