Wasp - Bembix

Wasp - Bembix
Chrissy Fields, San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA
July 27, 2006
Some kind of sand wasp? Any help would be appreciated. It doesn't really look like a Vespidae wasp to me, maybe some other family. Thanks a lot :-)

Bembix, probably a male.
Stephen is correct, this is a species of Bembix, and probably a male (long antennae, absence of tarsal rake on front "feet").

Sand wasps
I think you're right, a sand wasp, and I would say Bembix sp.

Bicyrtes is a related genus but according to the BugGuide guide page Bicyrtes is more likely to have the yellow bands straighter and not quite meeting at the abdomen's midline.
