Day flying moth - Heliothis phloxiphagus

Day flying moth - Heliothis phloxiphagus
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
July 29, 2006
Found in a very sunny bed of low flowers, mostly yellow. Lots of small bees and skippers in evidence, too. Very cooperative moth was one of three.

Moved from Helicoverpa.

I'll try to get back and reshoot one of the others. I'm so ignorant about moths that I didn't know the critter was worn. Or is that called moth eaten?, said he with an evil smirk and odd punctuation.

(Written later) A subsequent post by Hartmut indicated H. phloxiphaga is correct, and that pale coloring is apparently a variation.

Looks like Helicoverpa zea -
Corn Earworm Moth.

Thanks for your comment. I'd missed the fact that you'd worked in Ohio. I lived in/around Mentor until age 30.
