Diogmites
Had to be bigger than 12mm. This is not neoternatus. And they are harmless unless you were to capture one in your bare hand. This is not misellus or basalis or angustipennis. Possibly properans but these are tough by photo.

Robber is 1.2 cm. Will that make a difference? Thanks.

I just caught one of these in my backyard and don't know anything about them. Does anyone know if they bite or carry diseases that I should know about because I have a two year old son. If they're harmful does insect repelent keep them away?

Robber flies usually harmless
Robber flies do not normally bite people--they hunt and kill other insects, and do not feed on blood as do horseflies. If on catches a robberfly, I have heard that they can jab one with the "beak" if mishandled, but that is only in defense. I have had robberflies land on me a number of times, and they never cause me any concern--they are just looking for their insect prey from a convenient perch.

In short, a harmless native insect of no conceivable danger to adults or children. It might possibly help some in controlling other insects in your yard, so there is no reason to harm it.
