Size: 1.5"
I hope someone can fill me in on what's going on here and who did it. This is a Cinnamon Fern frond (Osmunda cinnamomea). The tip has been rolled into a neat, tidy ball. I'd guess maybe 4"-5" has been rolled up. I've checked larval food lists in some guides and see no mention of Osmunda as a food and the plant didn't look particularly chomped on so the plant might not really be relevant. Is there a pupa inside this? Or maybe something seeking shelter from hot, dry weather?

Moved from Unsolved Bug-related Mysteries.
Could be the work of either a moth or a spider; can't really tell without opening it up. If a moth larva, you would find a bunch of frass inside, and the leaf would be munched (but this wouldn't necessarily be evident from the outside); if a spider, the leaf would be entirely intact.
